Around this time of the year, most magazines publishes their yearly 'it' list or people who made a big impact or created headlines during the past year. For example, Time magazine has their 'Person of the Year' issue. And other magazines, mostly teen magazines and entertainment magazines, have their Top 50 or Top 100 People of the past year. Usually included in these list are celebrities, musicians, newcomers, athletes, or just your most popular (select category) whatever.
So, taking inspiration from that, I came up with my very own list of people who made my 2008. These are people who, for me, made quite a 'stir' during the past year.
DBSK
For kpop lovers such as myself, I think the return of the 'Gods' in the kpop music scene after almost two years of absence is the 'highlight' of 2008. DBSK released their fourth album last October and their comeback was the much awaited one in all of the comebacks that took place in the korean music scene last year. Wala na ngang pumansin kay Rain. Hehe. Their album 'Mirotic' has already broken sales record. And they have already won several music awards na. There even was an issue regarding the lyrics of the song which made them change 'under my skin' to 'under my sky' which i think is rather lame since i don't think this was the issue to begin with.
Super Junior
Super Junior is a 13-member boy band in Korea. A little 'too big' for a boy band, right? Anyway, although they didn't have that many activities last 2008, except for sub-unit activities, they made my 'it' list because they are the reason why i'm loving korean music now. I only found out about them last February and became a fan only last July. Siguro, if I didn't saw them, I wouldn't be this addicted to korean music. Haha. So they sort of became the bridge between me and kpop.
Wonder Girls
I think Wonder Girls is the most popular girl group in Korea now. They were even tagged as 'Korea's National Little Sisters.' I think 2008 was their year. With hit songs such as 'So Hot' and 'Nobody' both released last year, I think they already made a 'huge' mark on the kpop scene. It would be a challenge for the other girl groups in Korea to surpass their popularity. Even my siblings who doesn't understand Korean loves their 'Nobody' song and they were even dancing to it.
Big Bang
Big Bang has the most hit songs last year. I think they have the most number one songs in every countdown in Korea. Their song 'Haru Haru' was so popular last year, and they had song after song making it on the number one spot, with the last being 'Sunset Glow'. I even thought they'll win the MVP award this year. Too bad they were a little 'overshadowed' by DBSK's comeback.
SHINee
Hands down! SHINee for me is the best newcomer of 2008. There was this idol group boom in the korean music scene last year with several idol groups debuting every now and then. Among those newcomers, i think SHINee is the most popular and most successful. Their debut song "noona nomu yeppeo" or "Nuna, you're so pretty" was a big hit and they were indeed loved by the noona's (korean term for sister) and even the ajumma's.
Lee Hyori
Hyori also made her comeback in 2008. After two years, she finally released another album entitled 'It's Hyorish.' Her first single from that album 'U-Go-Girl' was such a hit that even other stars imitates her dance. Her comeback and her solo concert had both been succesful. It's just too bad she wasn't able to attend the year-end music festivals because she was confined to a hospital because of fatigue.
Rain
Another korean artist who made his comeback in the korean music scene, Rain, also released a new album this year. And i even anticipated his new music video with Ha Jiwon. And then his song 'Bad Boy' was good too. But i wasn't that impressed. I guess I was expecting a bit more from him considering he's a 'World Star.' Anyway, I think he deserves to be on the list because he made several hollywood movies this year and tried his best to penetrate the hollywood scene or the american market. Goodluck to him and the other korean artists (se7en & BoA) who plans to make it big on the american music scene too.
We Got Married couples
I love this show. I started watching it last June and I immediately got hooked the moment i started watching the first episode. I love all the couples because each of them were different. And the couple themes are really amusing and unique. My favorite couples are the Ant and Witch couple (Crown J & Seo Inyoung), Anbi couple (Andy of Shinhwa & Solbi) & the lettuce couple (HwangBo & HyunJoong of SS501). I really find these couples entertaining and funny. The AlShin couple is so sweet and so romantic. They look good together.
Leona Lewis
I love her 'Bleeding Love' song and the music video for that song is also one of my favorites. The song became such a huge hit in 2008 that it made her the breakthrough artist of 2008. I was even amazed to find out that Jesse McCartney has co-written the song. Still loving that 'keep bleeding, keep keep bleeding love...' lyrics.
David Cook
OMG! I was addicted to his voice for the most part of 2008. It's the first time that a 'rocker' won the American Idol contest. others only came close (Bo Vice lost to Carrie Underwood on Season 4 and Chris Daughtry didn't even make it to the final round). I actually thought that he wouldn't win and that David Archuleta, the much favored one, would win the competition instead. So i was a bit surprised that America decided to route for him. His version of Mariah Carey's 'Always Be My Baby' was also a huge hit. I love how he managed to arrange that song to make it his. I never imagined that a guy can sing a Mariah song, David Cook proved me wrong.
American Idol 7 contestants
So far, I think this season is my second favorite American Idol Season! This seasons' contestants were really talented and each of them has their own style. My favorite contestants were Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, Brooke White, Chickezie, David Cook and Ramiele Malubay. That's almost half of the contestants! I also think this season is also one of the most watched as everyone was really anticipating what each performer would bring for each week. And that everyone was having a hard time deciding who deserves to win the competition.
Rihanna
I think Rihanna really made it big this year. She was my favorite artist of 2008. I love how she has her own style and that you would easily recognize that it's definitely Rihanna when you hear her song. Anyway, I also love how she isn't afraid to experiment with different looks. I mean, sometimes, she's the only one who can pull-off a certain look which i refer to as the 'Rihanna look.' Her hook-up with Chris Brown is an added bonus for a fan like me!
Charice Pempengco
This girl also made it big last 2008. After her appearance on 'Star King,' she went on to perform on the Oprah winfrey show, the ellen degeneres show, and she even performed on some major artists concerts that it made me proud to be a Pinoy. Imagine seeing one of your kababayan being interviewed by Oprah and having a duet with Celine Dion, I'm sure you'll also feel proud.
Robert Pattinson
Now we go to the Twilight craze. I've seen this guy even before he played Edward Cullen on the movie 'Twilight.' He was Cedric Diggory on the movie 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' He wasn't noticeable back then as the main focus was on Daniel Radcliffe, but who wouldn't recognize his face now? I really think he fits the role. He kinda looks the part even in real life. A bit creepy, don't you think?
Heath Ledger
After watching the movie 'The Dark Knight,' I finally understand why his death was such a loss to the Hollywood movie industry. He was amazing in it! His potrayal as Joker, the batman's nemesis, was soooo good that it actually gives me the creeps. It was flawless. I really couldn't find anything negative to say about him as an actor. Too bad his life was cut short. At least, he left a legacy! I don't think there would be another actor who would come close to his almost perfect potrayal of Joker.
Robi Domingo
Who wouldn't like this guy? He looks good, has a pleasant attitude, and he's smart. This guy should really be everyone's role model. I don't think there's even a slightest bit of evil in him. hehe. too perfect diba? it kinda makes you wonder if he's really that good. Pero, i never doubted him. Even from the beginning, i knew that he's genuinely nice. If everyone would only look up to him, lots of parents would be proud.
Gossip Girl Cast
I love Gossip Girl. I think they're the new version of Beverly Hills 90210. I love the storyline and how it depicts teens of the upper class and today's generation. Another thing that i love about them are the clothes they wear. Makes me envy them really. I love their looks, especially Blair's. Pero clarify lang ha, i like her style not her attitude.
Amazing Race Asia 3 contestants
I never missed an episode of this show. This season was tagged to be 'The toughest race ever' and i do agree about that. Some tasks were really complicated and would definitely push the contestant's strength and their patience to the next level. Teamwork was also tested in most parts. Although they didn't visit other countries outside Asia as much as they did on Season 2 and that the level of competition is not as high as compared to Season 2 were almost everyone's a candidate to win the race, all in all the season has been good.
Chen Qiao En & Ethan Ruan
Their drama 'Fated to Love You' received the highest rating in all of Taiwan last 2008. The drama was so successful that it presented a whole new challenge for other dramas to surpass the show's rating. Ethan Ruan & Chen Qiao En became even more popular because of that show.
Michael Phelps
I'm sure this guy must have been a shark or some other creature from the sea during his past life. After bagging all of the gold medals for the swimming event during the 2008 Beijing Olympics last August, who wouldn't recognize this guy? He conquered it! I think it was one of the biggest wins in the olympics. It was indeed a sweep!
US President Barack Obama
Alas, Time magazine's person of the year, US President Barack Obama. Mr. Obama has inspired us in more ways than one. His dream coming true translates to hope for everyone. That all it would take for our dreams to come true is for us to believe in ourselves. I love hearing this man speak because there's just something about him that inspires you, moves you and touches you. The way he speaks about hope for everyone would really make you believe in it. And there are few people who has that ability to inspire people and i give credit to Mr. Obama for being one of those few.
